Introduction

Prof. Koester studied Agricultural Sciences at the University of Gießen and at the University of Hohenheim, Economics at the University of Saarbrücken and at the University of Göttingen. He received his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. pol.) from the University of Göttingen in 1968, a doctorate honoris causa (Dr. agr. h. c.) from the University of Giessen in 2003 and two further doctorates honoris causa from the University of Hohenheim and the Mongolian State University of Agriculture, both in 2012. Prof. Koester was a postdoctoral fellow in the Economics Department of the University of California, Berkeley . Before he joined the faculty in Kiel in 1978, he had held a professorship in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Göttingen from 1971 on. Ulrich Koester has taught and researched as a visiting professor for one semester at the following universities: the Technical University of Berlin; the Department of Economics of the State University of New York, Buffalo; the Institute for Development Studies, Nairobi, Kenya; the Mongolian State University of Agriculture in Ulaan Batar, Mongolia; the University of Warmia and Masuria, Olsztyn/Poland; Corvinus University, Budapest, Hungary; Agricultural University, Prague, Czech Republic; University Babeş-Bolyai, Cluj-Napoca, Romania; the University of Helsinki. For 10 years, Prof. Koester used to be a visiting research fellow for 3–5 months annually at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington, DC. In 1995, he was a visiting fellow at the World Bank, Washington, DC, and in 2000 at FAO, Rome. At the Institute of Agricultural Economics in Kiel, he held the Professorship of Agricultural Market Analysis and Market Policy up to 2003; he continues to teach and research as an Emeritus. He served as Dean for four years (1989-1991 and again 1998-2000) at the Faculty for Agricultural and Food Sciences in Kiel. Prof. Koester’s research has been documented in many books and articles (see below) His interest in policy research resulted in his membership of the Scientific Advisory Council to the German Minister for Agriculture and Food for more than 20 years and in advisory service for the EU, OECD; FAO, and World Bank. He also serves as a member of the editorial board of several professional journals and as co-editor of EuroChoices and as a member of the Scientific Council of IAMO (Leibniz-Institut für Agrarentwicklung in Mittel- und Osteuropa), Halle. He is also an Honory Member of the German Association of Agricultural Economists (Gesellschaft für Wirtschafts- und Socialwissenschaften des Landbaus), a member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists and a member of the Economic Committee of the German Association of Economists (Verein für Socialpolitik). Many of his former students hold professorships at German and foreign universities.

 

Main research areas

Prof. Koester's research interests are in agricultural market analysis, agricultural market policy, international trade in agricultural commodities and the transition of Eastern European and Central Asian economies. At IFPRI, he has conducted research on regional cooperation to improve food security as well as on agricultural policy reforms and regional market integration in Southern and Eastern African countries. At the University of Kiel, Department of Agricultural Economics, Prof. Koester teaches various courses in agricultural market analysis, agricultural market policy and international trade. In addition he is one of the founders of the interdisciplinary graduate college "Integrative valuation of the environment (Integrative Umweltbewertung)" which is founded by the Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft and provides scholarships for PhD students from economic and social science, natural science and jurisprudence.

 

Professional activities

Professor Ulrich Koester has been Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University in Kiel from 1978 to 2003; he continues to teach and research as an Emeritus. He has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture from 1989 to 1991 and from 1998 to 2000. Previously he has been teaching and pursuing research at the University of Göttingen, the University of Nairobi, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, D.C. Professor Koester's expertise has gained him a membership in the scientific advisory board of the German Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Agriculture and Food from 1981 to 2001. He has served as an adviser to the EU Commission, the European Parliament, the European Court of Auditors, the World Bank and various other organisations.
